About Sofía Viera

Also known as Mercedes Viera, they are a non-binary writer and tarot reader who is passionate about queerness, Latinidad, astrology, shopping, and so much more.  They were born and raised in Puerto Rico, and moved to New Jersey with their family after Hurricane Maria in 2017. They graduated from Rutgers University with a journalism degree and quickly got their first job at Refinery29 in 2021. They moved to Brooklyn, and have lived there ever since. Sofía has written about Puerto Rico, their queer identity, spirituality, their favorite products, and pretty much everything else.

Before R29, they created two online magazines: Femme Now and Rebeldía. Femme Now was about female and local entrepreneurship in Puerto Rico, where they interviewed brand owners, directed photo sessions, and collaborated with creatives. Rebeldía's focus was on investigative essays in both english and spanish about Latine queerness.
